In today’s competitive world mom and dad often have to struggle very hard to make ends meet. Or in cases where one of them is not around anymore, single parents have to make huge sacrifices just to provide their children. The result is that children are often left to their own devices. Pressures at school make it increasingly difficult for teachers to be true educators in the full sense of the word. And the children are the ones who pay the price. With no one to guide them in the challenges of life, children often end up drifting around, feeling aimless and inconsequential. That is why there are so many children today with no anchor in life, no hope. It is no surprise that many of these children turn to crime and drug abuse. After all, how could they know any better? At Bergkroon we would like to make a difference. We want to take hands with parents and teachers in the project of educating our children. Even if it is only for a short time, we would like to show these children a different, positive side of life. We want to show them that they are special, that they are in this life with a purpose and that they can make a difference. Our life skills program aims to empower the youth with the knowledge and skills that are necessary to face challenges in their lives. By encouraging and supporting healthy behaviour in our children we can teach them to thrive in an environment that is beset with conflict, violence, gender and ethnic discrimination and HIV/AIDS.
In our world it is not enough to have simple academic skills like literacy and numeracy. One needs to be equipped with an understanding of oneself and one’s companions in order to live a meaningful life. One needs to have a sense of one’s own strengths and interests. By sharing life skills lessons with your children, we will inspire them to discover these things and to set positive goals for themselves. By working with parents and educators in this mission, we will help your children to shine. The three-day life skills program at Bergkroon is aimed specifically at grade six and seven learners who would not otherwise have the opportunity to attend a camp. Our program works on a “learn-by-doing” principle. We take children out of the classroom and teach them the value of a meaningful life by involving them in activities that are fun, challenging and stimulating. These include creative pursuits like music, drama, dance and the arts. Our obstacle course and low ropes track also provides a wonderful opportunity for the children to engage in outdoors, adventure-related activities.
After every activity we have a session that allows the children to process and learn from their experience. Our aim is to help them to discover their potential and to develop their leadership ability. Important life skills that they will take with them from the event are teamwork, conflict management, interpersonal relationships, problem solving, creativity and planning. We will teach them that it is important to serve one another, to be honest, trustworthy, loyal and respectful. We will encourage them to be fellow workers in God’s Kingdom and to walk their life’s path with Jesus as their guide. We realize that the achievement of these goals are a lifelong process, but we are confident that we can provide the children with a head start by setting them on the right course.
